Evangelion is beyond what we call groundbreaking; it establishes a kind of depth of purpose that no one had known animation could take on.

The End of Evangelion is without a doubt Anno Hideaki’s magnum opus. For all the sorrow, grief, anger, despair, and loneliness that it contains, the film is ultimately an affirmation that we in this world are worthwhile and necessary. To put such a journey on screen is an act of daring, but to be able to make it so utterly entrancing is proof of Anno’s quality and mastery as a filmmaker.

If you want some music, go to Anime on My Mind and get Hirano Aya’s cover of “Sore ga Ai Deshou.” It’s the opening theme of Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! and was also covered (by Aya) in Lucky Star. Although I personally think Shimokawa Mikuni (the original singer) did a better job, Aya’s version shows off just how insanely good she is at voice acting. The duet with herself is... epic... ...

Well I had originally planned to release the new review of The End of Evangelion to commemorate the premier of the new Evangelion films in Japan, but the rewrite got much more involved than I had anticipated. I apologize in advance for the length, but if you read the entire thing, maybe I’ll send you a cookie or something. ...

I’m behind in reviews again—shocker, I know. In my time away from the site, I’ve been trying to get into some semblance of a routine with watching and writing about anime. Well, turns out my timing wasn’t bad; I was able to find a cam rip of the pretentiously titled Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone. I haven’t been able to watch the full thing yet (expect a more in-depth post by the end of the weekend), but there are a few things worth mentioning off the bat. ...

I didn’t get a chance to finish the entire movie yet, but I’ll comment on the first third (hopefully, I can finish the rest tomorrow). The major thing I’m noticing is the CGI. There are scenes where it works and is appropriate, and there are scenes where it just looks out of place. ...

Fact: if you try to draw grass in a mound shape, it will look like pubes unless it’s highly stylized. So, like the new design? I feel I have accomplished my goal of making it look largely like the previous site, except more open. Closed is Web 1.0. Open is Web 2.0. ...

The situation is tense. Bleak. Desperate, even. You’re surrounded by enemy contacts all over the freaking place. Half your systems are down. Thrusters are barely responding. In this situation, who would you want on your crew? Who could you rely on to get the job done? Who can you trust to pull that miracle out of his ass, to turn death into a fighting chance to live? ...
