My first – and possibly only – anime con of the year just wrapped up! ACen is always an exciting time for me as I get to meet my con buddies and speak to industry folks. But this year’s con was decidedly less business-oriented as I came with a group of friends who had never been to an anime con before. Even so, they wound up showing admiration for great cosplay.
For the last few years, one of the first things you see before you get to the exhibition hall is a large area cordoned off for mural artist Eric Maruscak. You’ll usually see him hard at work drawing up something or other with colored chalk. This year I had a chance to photograph him working:
Most of the time when I want to take a photo, I ask permission. First of all it’s polite, but it also gets the cosplayer’s attention and I believe it makes for a better shot. But sometimes you see a moment that’s too strange or funny, and you don’t want to disrupt it. Seeing the Red Skull checking his phone was one of those moments.
There was a very large video gaming arcade with all sorts of games I’d never seen before. As I explored it, I found two cosplayers dressed as Persona 4‘s Yu and Yousuke (in their Dancing All Night getups). They weren’t trying to be in character but were still kinda in character anyway.
Speaking of being in character, I always appreciate it when cosplayers go that extra mile during the photo shoots.
Staying in character is great, but the most important thing is to remember to have fun!
I dropped by Good Smile Company’s booth to say hi to Mamitan, but as soon as I learned that she was a big Zootopia fan I had to introduce her to my friend. He was walking around with us dressed as one of the wolf guards from the film, and proved to be a big hit at the con.
Our group had some down time Saturday just before dinner, so we went to one of the bars at the Hyatt. As we drank and chatted, one of my friends asked “Is that the Bear Jew?” It wasn’t hard coming up with the pose I wanted to get.
Sometimes cosplay photography overlaps with street photography. This Fran cosplayer offered to stand up and pose when I asked for a photo, but I thought it would be funnier to see her hunched over a bunch of drinks. I’m pretty sure it was water but this is all about imagination, right?
This year’s ACen was special because I got to introduce a lot of friends to the scene, and was able to win over some new converts. The variety of cosplay was amazing as well and I’m really happy with the set of pictures I took. If you enjoyed these, click through the rest of the pages for the full gallery!
