I’m probably going to start wrapping up my Super Serial posts with these roundups. The main reason is that I don’t really care about anime news. I’m not really that into the industry side of it. Maybe once upon a time I was, but nowadays not so much. Also I’m not sure what to do with episode recaps. I’ll have to think of a way to make them more interesting. In the meantime, here are this past week’s items of note.
I’m back from my Mexican vacation, so now I can get back to posting. And the theme of this week is… cosplay! I went to Anime Central two weekends ago. Though it was my first anime convention, I think I’m addicted. A few more have happened since then, including Anime North and Animazement. I think my dream now is to host a Travel Channel show where I just go to anime cons and… do whatever Travel Channel hosts do. I want to be the Anthony Bourdain of otaku.
This week’s feature has some older stuff, but that’s only because I wanted to go for a more retro feel. I feel like we haven’t really explored the genesis of rubbish Evangelion merchandise, nor have we fully appreciated how far along we’ve come. It’s hard to say if we would have fancy iPhone button covers and Evangelion shoelaces without this other merchandise. Mostly it’s hard to say because nobody gives a shit, and it’s a stupid thing to waste time thinking about. So I guess that makes it perfect for Makigumo!
Wow, it’s week three already. I thought I would have to pace myself. I thought I would have to portion out the coverage because surely, there’s only so much licensing one company can dole out. Incredibly enough, though, I’ve been unable to keep up. I’ve been plumbing the depths of the back catalog, but new merchandise just keeps rolling out. So this week will be a split of some new, some old. And as always, it’s all rubbish.
With Evangelion 3.33 released to home video, this past week has been a good one for rubbish Evangelion merchandise. Hopefully we’ll see some good Eva merchandise too. Mostly I want more Robot Damashii Evas and some of those Bandai Monster Arts Angels that were teased forever ago. For now, though, we’ll just have to have a few laughs at the shitty merch.
Let’s see if I have the diligence (and expression, and knowledge, and understanding, and courage) to run a weekly news roundup for figures. I already write for a figure news site but this post is geared towards only stuff I like. So expect to see plenty of NSFW things and butts. I am nothing without my love of butts.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime. You know that. It’s also a marketing juggernaut. You think Star Wars is the village bicycle of intellectual properties? You’re wrong. There is much more Evangelion merchandise. Well, I don’t have facts to back that up. I do know there are tons of Evangelion toys out there. Beyond that, there’s a lot of branded Evangelion merchandise. Some of it might even be decent – who knows? I’ll probably only ever own a fraction of what’s out there. But there’s also terrible Evangelion merch – stuff that can’t possibly be good or useful. Stuff that makes you wonder why they even put an Evangelion logo on it (before reminding yourself that the answer is money). So to celebrate the release of Evangelion 3.33 to Blu-ray, I’ll be starting a quasi-regular feature called Rubbish Evangelion Merchandise. Guess what it’s about!
I realized it would be dishonest to call these “monthly outlook” posts because, well, I don’t ever really do anything that I say I will. Thus is the Makigumo experience. But now we have a whole new year so I thought I’d start the January 2013 post by looking at 2012… and some web stats!
I’ve been spending an insane amount of time playing Persona 4 Golden, as you’ve probably deduced from the state of this blog. In just under a month’s time, I’ve logged over a hundred hours and am on the cusp of the ending. So I figure it would be a good time to let out my inner fanboy and write about the new things I love about P4G. Before you read on, be warned that I’ll be discussing the new content, so there will be some minor spoilers.
I have a pretty big pile of figures accumulating, so I’m thinking I’ll probably review a bunch of them this month. That’ll have to wait until my work table comes in, though. I’m trying a dark-colored pub table this time. Mostly it’s about the height; normal-height tables tend to make me hunch over too much, so I think a taller table will be easier to take photos on.
Just a quick announcement: I’ve disabled my nemesis, Fancybox. This was achieved by editing the parent theme. As usual with things I do myself, I might have broken something. If so let me know by commenting below or leaving feedback. Why disable Fancybox? Because I fucking hate automatic image resizing.
